The number they aren’t making more of

One of the first 86. In the mid-1940s AT&T carved most of North America into eighty-six numbering plan areas and gave each one a three-digit code. 313 is one of the original 86, published in 1947. The codes were handed out on a simple rule: the areas with the largest populations got the ones that were easiest to dial, back when dialing meant a rotary wheel and every digit cost you a full turn. Detroit got 313.

It used to be much bigger than the city. The original 313 covered all of southeast Michigan. It has been cut twice — in 1993 the north went to 810, taking Brighton, Flint and Port Huron with it; in 1997 the west went to 734, taking Ann Arbor, Monroe County and the western Wayne County suburbs. What was left is essentially Detroit. The number didn’t shrink because the city got smaller. It shrank because everyone around it needed their own.

And they aren’t making more of them. Since October 7, 2025, every local call inside the 313 footprint has taken all ten digits. The Michigan Public Service Commission authorized a second code, 679, to overlay the same communities once 313’s numbers run out — projected for the fourth quarter of 2027. Nobody with a 313 number loses it. But new ones are finite now, and that is exactly why people wear it.

One more, because it’s ours: in 1879 Detroit supposedly became the first city in the country to assign individual phone numbers, which is what made the party line obsolete.
