Description

Détroit, with the accent. That is how it was written in 1701, when Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac put a fort on the narrow water between two lakes and called the place what it was: le détroit — the strait.

The accent got sanded off somewhere over the next three hundred years, and most people never learn the name is a description rather than a proper noun. This Detroit t shirt puts it back. One word, set in heavy condensed type, with the acute accent doing all the work.

It is the whole history of the city compressed into a single mark, and it is entirely in the public domain — a place name in a dead colonial spelling, borrowed from nobody. Printed direct-to-garment on a Bella + Canvas 3001 in black, navy or dark grey heather.

This is an original design. Detroit Outfit is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or licensed by any sports team or league — we make apparel about the city itself.
